How To Make Your ADHD and Asset in Business

Those of us with ADHD know that it can be torturous to try and start a venture or to even just focus on your work tasks at all.

I spent years trying to just force myself to focus and frankly I just spun out for those years doing absolutely nothing and got almost nowhere.

Fortunately for all you reading this however, there is hope. I’ve learned a great deal over the years and now I want to share this with all of you so you can truly succeed in business.

I would like to say before I get into it that I am by no means a doctor or psychiatrist, I just have struggled with this issue so I wanted to share the tips that have worked for me.

Breaking Down the Issue

  • You may be paralyzed by anxiety at the thought of starting whatever task you need to do
  • Focusing on completing a task, especially a large one in business will be extremely hard
  • Focusing without the perfect level of stimulus, especially on a boring job, can be almost impossible

Solution Time

Tricking your brain

I’ve tried countless hacks like this that are all based in some sort of scheduling and they just did not work.

Writing down a schedule was useless as I couldn’t force myself to look at it and if I forgot one thing it spiraled from there.

The key I found to overcoming this is to do one tiny thing BEFORE some other event of the day.

For example, I have quite a hard time keeping my house clean in anyway, I just get paralyzed thinking of cleaning. To overcome it I simply do one small thing such as pick up one shirt from the floor and put it away right before I brush my teeth. This small act of picking up one shirt then leads to a whole lot more cleaning and voila it gets done.

Find your perfect stimulus

This one is extremely difficult because it’s different for everyone but so rewarding when you find the balance.

I was told so many times that the reason I wasn’t getting anything done was that I had Netflix going while I was working from home or I had an iPhone game going at all times. Now this was true however, the thought of being without those stimulus and just working was so awful I never could. Anyone with ADHD will say the same, that lack of stimulus is a daunting thought and very hard to force oneself to do.

This is where the perfect stimulus comes in, and I wish I could tell you that I had the perfect solution for you but it’s 100% trial and error.

For example, I only recently figured out my perfect stimulus level. It is at a coffee shop with a large coffee in hand listening to a podcast. With this level of stimulus I can’t do anything but focus and I get more done in an hour that I would in a week before I found it.

You must simply test different work sites, areas, and stimuluses to see which combination gets you focusing like you’ve never done before.

Use Peer Pressure

To be clear I do not mean that anyone should be made to feel bad for their mental illness or anything of the sort.

What I mean by this is that you can use the presence of your friends or family to get incredible amounts of work done.

If you bring your laptop around your friends, not in a hangout position necessarily, but more just with them in the same house or room it truly creates the thought that if you aren’t working they’ll realize. Just this aspect of peer pressure creates a focus that I normally would never be able to experience.

Additionally, if you let a couple close friends or family members know your plans for lets say an internet company, you will be more forced to follow through to the end.

The point here is not to make yourself feel bad but to hold yourself accountable for your success. This tactic can be incredibly useful as those with ADHD know it is extremely difficult to finish tasks therefore, anything that can help you finish work is going to be incredibly useful.

Treat ADHD Like a Superpower (Because It Is!)

I’ve given some tips to use to help combat your symptoms but truly I don’t want you to see this as an anchor to you. There is nothing more powerful when used right than ADHD in business.

It lets you be more creative than anyone else as no one else can think like you can, it lets you focus like no other once you’ve found that perfect stimulus, and lets you come up with entrepreneurial ideas faster than better than neurotypical people around you.

You will for sure have challenges because of this but you will also be able to accomplish things no one else can.

As Alan Turing once said, “Sometimes it’s the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine.”.

Use everything that’s unique about you to your advantage because that will be a business advantage that many others cannot use to theirs.
